Way To Draw A Hand Holding Something

Step 1 First step is quite simple, we will start by drawing an outline looking similar to our fist.

Step 2 Draw 5 lines for the fingers, the distance should be equal and the line for the thumb will be;different as shown. Draw small circles to mark the joints.

Step 3 Now we will draw the fingers using the outlines made in the earlier step, and bend the fingers at 2nd circle to mark that we are holding something. Keep in mind to draw some lines the palm also.

Step 4 Remove the outlines and darken the actual lines. Now draw the object above and below the hand to make it look that it is being held.

Step 5 Wow, it looks amazing. Now you can color appropriately or follow the colors we have used.

Six Steps To Realistic Hands

A step-by-step approach can help demystify the process of drawing hands, as well as make sure your illustrations look anatomically correct at every stage. Comic book artist Megan Levens uses a six-step process for hand drawing, starting with basic bone structure and building up to details like fingernails and shading.

Step 1: Start with bone structure.

Your first layer should be the bones of the hand, the carpals. Dont worry about making it pretty; this step is about laying the foundation for an anatomically correct hand. Just as the bones are the framework of the body, bones will also be the framework of your drawing. Each finger radiates out at a different angle, notes Levens. They shouldnt all point straight ahead together. Daviscourt also recommends starting from the wrist at this step because the wrist is where the lines of the hand start to intersect visually.

To make your hands look realistic, consider the height differences between your fingers. The middle finger should be the tallest, with the ring finger and index finger on the downward slope of the arch, and the little finger finishing out the line. The thumb is an outlier from the rest and should sit farther apart from the others.

Measure And Draw The Fingers

To determine the length of each finger, measure the length from the wrist to the knuckles and duplicate that. The dotted line marks the maximum finger height. Our fingers vary in length and since the middle finger is the longest, we will use it as a reference to find the height of the other 3 fingers. To do that, draw a curved line that is similar to the first one drawn in step 1.

One: Draw And Develop The Shape Of The Palm

Using your HB pencil start by drawing a rectangle which should be more vivid to make your sketch visible. Then make a slope from the top left corner to the right side of the triangle. Ensure that the right side of the slope dips down lower than the left side when drawing the back of the right, the opposite applies for the left hand.

Consider How Hands Work

The most important thing in drawing hands is to understand their anatomy. Look at your own hand it comprises of a palm, thumb, index finger and the three remaining fingers, which even though they can be moved separately, work together when it comes to grabbing objects. Move your hand and notice how your fingers and thumb bend and move, and what happens to the palm.

Creating Hand Drawings Step

At this point, we looked at hand anatomy, specific landmarks, and proportions. Lets continue now to draw the hand step-by-step.

I think the easiest way to draw the hand is first to observe your reference and note the outline or the shape you are about to draw. Really try to take it in and understand the spirit of that shape and have a plan as to what you plan to put on the canvas.

Then armed with the knowledge that we have covered in this tutorial so far, identify the landmarks you are looking for. Depending on the reference you look at, some of the information may not be present in the image or in real life depending on lighting conditions, however having the knowledge of anatomy you should still know where the landmarks are. I created a checklist for reference when drawing hands that you can download by subscribing to my newsletter below.

Once you check for the landmarks and identified their placement, now we can begin to actually draw the hans.

Start by identifying the shape and the angle of the palm, and then attach the fingers to it. So lets do that now:

In this drawing of the palm of the hand, I tried to identify the angle that we are looking at and the overall shape of the palm, and now I can start drawing the fingers. It is a good idea to indicate landmarks at this point, is the pisiform bone visible, which knuckles are visible and should they be made more prominent in your drawing depending on style or expression?

Layer And Folder Set Up

How To Draw HANDS – EASY SIMPLE BASIC SHAPES IN ANIME MANGA

While you work on your story, you will notice that you must organize your layers and folders to make it easier. I suggest to have as many folders as you need to complete a chapter in the size you choose.

This is an example of how it looks when the chapter is done. I like to add colors to the main folders to identify them while working.

And this is how I usually organize each folder inside.

I use the Frame Border to create those comic/manga panels you see as 1, 2 and 3, but I delete the background layer inside and then deactivate the rulers. This tool is the best one for your webcomics.

There are also normal layers for panels that dont need a frame.

I make additional folders for SFX and Balloons, so they dont get lost in other folders. Each folder can have more than 30 panels, so its necessary to organize. I try to name the layer the same way I use the number of the panel Im working on.

Keep in mind that you will need to look into folders and layers, so splitting the layer palette to have two parts will help.

The Basic Volumes Of The Hand

Another fundamental strategy of figure drawing is to simplify the body into its most basic volumes. Although there is no single way to do this , it is usually a combination of boxes, spheres and cylinders.

Work Largest to Smallest

When drawing, you should always try and start with the largest forms first and work your way down to smaller forms. The largest volume of the hand is the box-like form that the fingers and thumb connect to. You can think of this box as beginning at the wrist and ending at the knuckle line . Finding the placement, proportions and spatial orientation of this box is one of the most powerful ways to begin a hand drawing.

Establish Cylindrical Segments

The fingers and thumb can be simplified into a series of cylinders with the finger tips being rounded off at the ends. Each finger has three cylindrical segments while the thumb only has two. In the drawings below , I began with the gesture process described above before first drawing the large box of the hand and then drawing the fingers and thumb as a series of cylindrical segments. Ive paid particularly close attention to the ellipses of each cylinder because ellipses are what show the spatial orientation of the form.

How Do I Construct A Best

  • Take a look at the data and as yourself these questions
  • Does the data look like a line? or a big blob? Try to approximate the general trend of the data with your mind
  • Does the trend of the points look positively correlated or negatively correlated ? Your trendline should mimic those correlations.
  • If you blur your eyes, can you see a thick line trending in one direction or another? This is another way to visualize the trend of the data.
  • Now that you have an idea of the general trend of the data, there are two possible ways to construct a best-fit line by eye. You may use either of them; both are correct and relatively easy ways to get a pretty accurate representation of a best-fit line. Pick the one that makes the most sense to you. The first method involves enclosing the data in an area:

How To Draw Hands: Getting Started With Simple Shapes

How To Draw Hands (EASY tutorial) – Draw Cartoons!

Now, lets take a look at how this diagram relates to a real hand. The colored lines on the image of the real hand are color-coded with the bones of the hand in the diagram.

Now you know how the hand is constructed, lets get started with some basic shapes and proportions which will help you draw it more easily.

For this first exercise, youll be drawing the palm side of the hand.

    1. Drawing the Palm of the Hand

The simplest way to draw the palm of the hand is to draw a shape like this, which is basically a rectangle with rounded edges:

If it helps, imagine this as being similar to the shape of a steak Also, because this steak shape isnt completely flat, youll need to draw it with some depth like in the illustration.

Drawing and thinking of this shape as a 3D object will help you when you come to add the fingers and will stop your drawing from looking too flat.

Using the illustration as your reference, practice drawing this shape as many times as you like until you fully understand it.

Once you feel totally confident with drawing this shape, youll be ready to move onto the next part of learning how to draw hands.

    2. Drawing the Fingers and Thumbs

Once youve drawn your basic shape for the palm, its time to move on to the fingers. Lets look at the basic proportions of the hand first, because this will help you draw the fingers at the correct size:

The basic proportions of the hand are as follows:

Drawing Hands From The Other Side

Once youve got the hang of drawing hands from the palm side, why not try drawing them from the other side, otherwise known as the back of your hand?

The major differences between the palm and the back of your hand:

    • The visible bones of the knuckles
    • The different appearance of the skin on the back of the hand
    • Creases between the fingers
    • Fingernails

Start off by drawing the same basic steak shape for the main part of the hand. Then, taking note of the proportions of the fingers and thumb and the joints between the bones , sketch in those basic cylinder shapes to represent the fingers.

    1. Adding the Fingernails

The fingernails are often overlooked when learning how to draw hands, but theyre actually a pretty important feature especially if youre drawing or painting hands close up.

Not only that, but the fingernails can also be used as a useful reference point with regards to the proportions of the hand. For example, the top of the index and ring fingers roughly lines up with the bottom of the fingernail on your middle finger.Pro Tip: Take a good look at your own hand and fingernails. Are they long, short, painted or in need of a little manicuring?

The look of the hands and fingernails says a lot about a person, so this is something youll want to bear in mind when creating original characters, for example. So how do you get started? Here are the main points to remember:

    2. Drawing the Knuckles

    3. Drawing the Crease Lines on the Fingers

Use A Blending Stick For Smooth Shading

    It is possible to create smooth, blended effects using pencils for example, to capture a sky. “Sometimes it’s preferable for your shading to be less sketchy and more smooth and subtle,” says artist Marisa Lewis. “Pencil lines don’t blend perfectly unless you’re very careful.”;

To avoid your initial scribbles showing through, Lewis uses a particular technique see more art techniques here. “Use spare paper to doodle a big swatch of soft graphite or charcoal pencil, then use a large blending stick to pick up the soft dust to use for your image,” she explains. “Keep using the blending stick and adding more scribbles as you need more graphite.” You can then build up darker areas to create definition.
